SK, as we so affectionately call him, has to be one of the more interesting members of MiB. Quiet, unassuming and quite the introvert on the surface, our “Mike” from Toa Payoh can be quite the life of the party thanks to his renowned bongol-playing skills and his silky moves on the dancefloor. Who can forget his performance on his 21st birthday party that left the guys jealous and the girls queuing up to get his phone number.

SK was recently elected as the Treasurer for MiB. Now when it comes to money and MiB, it takes a really brave man to take up the responsibility of being the Treasurer. But these qualities are evident in SK and we know he is a trustworthy member of the team and has more than fulfilled his treasury duties so far.

SK is a pretty versatile football player. MiB lifted the 2006 Rotaract Cup trophy in NUS thanks to his brilliant one-handed saves in goal. He really carried the team on his own in some of the matches in that tournament. But he will be the first to admit that he would rather be the one banging in the goals at the other end and SK does not come up short in that department too. When Senthil is on fire, expect extraordinary bicycle kicks and step-overs to become a common sight on the football pitch. He has scored so many goals in the past where the opponents themselves have stood there in admiration.

For field games, SK is our first choice full-back and though he is quite reluctant to play there, he is able to carry out that position brilliantly thanks to his above-average fitness by MiB’s standards, and his never say die attitude. Though he may seem to be relaxed and cool on the surface, he is an extremely passionate sportsman and his enthusiasm has rubbed off on the team and inspired us to some really memorable victories.

SK is an extremely well-grounded person and to the surprise of many people, still pretty traditional. He is the apple of his parents’ eye and as a friend, is extremely assuring, responsible and trustworthy. Though he is not one to openly share with all MiB members about his personal life, the majority of us know enough about him to empathise when things don’t go so well, and celebrate with him when things are on a roll.

Having just armed himself with a degree from NTU, we know that SK will buckle down to the necessities of life and emerge successful in whatever he does. He was one of MiB’s first ever signings from Hybrids when the teams were first formed in SJI, and today, SK has grown to be one of MiB’s cornerstones in defence, attack, and everywhere else.

So I have heard a lot about this Popeye's Chicken and how they recently opened a 2nd outlet in Singapore at the Singapore Flyer. I love KFC and so decided that I should go and try this new place. Come on let's face it, your chicken has to be pretty good if you want to take on KFC and fried chicken..


I have to say the outlet is not an easy place to get to by public transport. I ended up walking all the way from City Hall MRT and that was a 20 minute walk. Some of the guys were supposed to join me but pulled out for one reason or another, so I was on my own for this field investigation. I later realised that some buses do stop nearby, and they are namely: 56, 960, 77, 75, 171, 195..


So I finally got there and had a look at the menu. It looked very similar to the KFC one. I decided to be adventurous and tried the 3-piece combo. I had 2 mild and 1 spicy chicken. The combo came with small fries, a regular drink, and a "biscuit" that was more like a bun.


I have to say the meal was pretty filling for $8.90. Price-wise it was more or less same as KFC. The restaurant was crowded for a weekday night and the ambience of the place was pretty nice and relaxed. Now down to the nitty-gritty, the CHICKEN:


In a nutshell: If you like KFC Spicy chicken, then you will enjoy Popeye's chicken. If you prefer KFC Original Recipe, then Popeye's falls short but its still pretty decent. The chicken was hot and fresh, more than you can say for a lot of KFC chicken I have had in the past. The skin was very much like the KFC Spicy Chicken and the meat was pretty tasty. So all in all it was good, but not KFC finger licking good.


But where Popeye's stands out is the fries and the biscuit. The fries are garnished with salt and pepper and taste much better than soggy KFC ones. The biscuit that comes with strawberry jam lends a nice touch to the meal and you could see yourself ordering a few more because it really is rich and good.

All in all a pretty satisfying meal, but if I really wanted good fried chicken, then KFC is still the place to go. However, the Chicken fillet burger on the menu looked pretty interesting and it would be worth making another trip there to try that instead. The fries and biscuits are also a top draw and if you haven't tried it before, I'd recommend you go try.

Updates..

MiB met up on Sunday at NUS at 4pm to play. It was a good time for the working group, namely Zal, KK and Maran to get a feel of soccer again. We played against a group of indian guys that probably look like us in 5 years time. They also had a manjann in tow, just like our harry lim.

We then adjourned to Cafe Cartel at Bishan for dinner. We ended up sinning and ordering really over the top desserts. Caramel, vanilla ice-cream and more caramel is never a good idea. And the chocolate brownies, well, I think they stuffed 3 chocolate bars into those 2 pieces of cake. Prak hasn't slept till now from the sugar overdose.

A few of us met up on Monday to get some stuff around Sim Lim and book our MiB trip. It's finally done! MiB will be going overseas together. Eventhough it's only Batam, we have to start somewhere and here's hoping that with work and higher incomes, we can plan more adventurous trips in the future.

Here are the details of the trip: 3 Days 2 Nights to Batam. S$123 for ferry ride, accomodation and buffet breakfast. $28 in taxes. So far confirmed are Harvey, Prak, Bert and Vana. Almost confirmed is PP. Riz and Puvan are pending. It promises to be a fun time of go-karting, beach sports, playstation and a little sampling of alcohol here and there.=)

Sat is trying to arrange a field game for Saturday. If that happens then Friday there will be no soccer at NUS. Maybe we could head to Cafe Iguana on Thursday or Friday night to chill out if you guys want.

Ah Ah CB Cram....

MiB met up for soccer on Friday at NUS. We started late cos Riz had an interview in Tampines. And we all know why he got stuck there, though he is still adamant that it was because he could not get a cab. Soccer was good as usual, and it was nice to welcome back Harry to the courts. He looked sharp and so did Chan. Moment of the day came when self-proclaimed "ArSATvin" was through on goal with Riz and Harvey to his right totally unmarked. There was 1 defender there but there were 3 of us. Instead of making the pass, he tried to be clever and dribble. To the amusement of everyone watching, he tripped on the ball, fell on the floor and toe-poked the ball to Harvey, which was then deflected for a corner.. Remember, it was the ball's fault.


We then adjourned to Botak Jones at Braddell. We first went to buy some lime juice with sour plum at the famous Toa Payoh stall. For all those who were having their drinks, if you didn't know, Sat did some quality-control for you guys to make sure the aunty did not poison your drinks. Food was pretty reasonable but Harvey made a boo-boo with the Pizza, thinking it was ham pepperoni instead of beef. Sorry my bad. We also ran into some interesting company there but all's well that ends well..


We then went down to Kovan area where Anan recommended O Bar. Puvan walked in there, there were lots of manjanns drinking and enjoying their karaoke sessions, and the only seats they had left were at the front of the bar, right in front of the karaoke screens. Needless to say we left the place to head to the Grapevine. Pretty alright place to chill if you ask me, just that it's outdoors so better to go on a cooler day. Prak's strawberry frappe was well-loved. Anan tried to clean the table with Puvan's mango-shake, while Riz n Vana got a jolt from the LIME juice. The waitress serving us had cute dimples I have to say. We had our usual MiB conversations and finally at 130am split from there.

1. MiB trip to Batam is ON. 4D3N about $220. Hotel, ferry, 3hr massage, city tour.. So far confirmed ones are Prak, Bert, Vana and Harvey. Pending are Puvan and Riz. Looks like the rest have pulled out for one reason or another. Thanks guys..
   
   


2. Are we doing anything on Sunday? Sat and Anan were trying to get a field-game but it looks hard at the moment. Worse to worse we can play at NUS (it's FREE!) at 4pm. People like Zal and Bert are itching to play so we can make something happen. I don't mind swimming or playing at the Jurong East Swimming Complex. After that maybe we can go to the much-heralded Cafe Iguana before 9pm to enjoy the happy-hour benefits. I am leaving the planning to you guys as I have a game at 3pm. I will join you all after that.
   
   


3. I need to go to Sim Lim on Monday. Hancock after that? Who's on?

Updates..

1. Harry needs to go Peninsula tomorrow (Wednesday). So far me, Anan, Riz, Harry, Puvan and Sat are on. Chan and Vana pending. Meet at 4pm if you need to buy something. After that we will go have dinner somewhere and maybe watch a movie or something.
   
   
2. Soccer is ON this Friday at 4pm. We have enough people and Anan and Harry are itching to play. We can also play on Sunday at 4pm for those who missed out and had to work. I have checked with St Wilfred today and they don't have anything available for this weekend or the next.
   
   Alternative is Khalsa turf which costs $50 for a 2-hour slot before 6pm and $75 for a 1-hour slot after 6pm. So alternative is to play say 6-8pm and pay $150 in all. It should work out to about $10 per person if we get enough people. So as far as we are concerned, we will play this Friday at NUS, then plan from there. Ok Zal? Smile a bit more it's good for you ask Riz..
   
   
3. Our guys are graduating. Riz, SK, Rooban and KK will be having their commencement ceremonies soon. If you guys can give us the dates of the ceremonies we can come down and take photos with you and make it a memorable day for all involved. So please update on the chat-box. Did I miss anyone?
